ANKLE PAIN

Ankle Pain

An ankle is a complex construction, with many bones, joints, tendons and ligaments all working together with every step. It’s pretty amazing that we can put so many miles on these joints and they will still remain pain-free most of the time.

A misstep, infection, overuse and other causes can result in ankle injury and pain. The doctors at Southwest Austin Foot and Ankle Clinic have extensive knowledge and experience in treating feet and ankles. That enables them to precisely diagnose and treat problems in these joints that result in your ankle pain.

Common Causes of Ankle Pain

Arthritis: Inflammation in the joints between foot bones can cause breakdown of the cartilage that cover these joints.

Bursitis
: Fluid-filled cushions called bursa sit between the bones. If bursae become inflamed due to overuse, bad shoes, impact injury or other cause, it will hurt to walk or flex your foot.

Fractures:
Being struck on the ankle, rolling it or falling from a height can cause a fracture in the lower parts of the leg bones or in the foot bones right below them.

Gout:
Gout is an accumulation of uric acid crystals. Usually, these crystals accumulate in the big toe but they can also collect in the ankle.

Infection:
Soft tissue or bone infections can cause swelling and pain in the ankle.

Sprains:
When ligaments are abruptly stretched too far, they can become inflamed and torn.

Tendonitis:
This condition of tendon inflammation can be caused by repetitive movement or sudden injury. The tendon in the foot most susceptible to tendonitis is the Achilles tendon.
